  Positive Action

Increasingly coming to our attention from official sources, are warnings and advice to the public, regarding the use of mobile phones and the wisdom of avoiding exposure to electromagnetic field radiation, A number of unions world wide, have advised their members to restrict the use of mobile phones. Two large Sydney hospitals, as well as Municipal Councils in UK and Australia are known to be exercising prudence by disallowing mobile base station installations close to schools and other sensitive areas.

Many scientists now speak openly of the need for extreme caution of EMR and RFR exposure. Where new work is concerned, power authorities are seen to be prudent in as much as they avoid exposing people to EMR from powerlines - if the cost is not too great. - a stricture that needs reassessing urgently. The cost to the power authority should not take precedence over the cost to health of members of the community.

Moreland City Council of Melbourne, Australia has recently produced a draft report:

'Strategy for Reducing Public Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields' that warns 'health effects range from headaches to life-threatening cancers.' This council claims that "electromagnetic fields generated by electrical equipment, mobile phone towers and powerlines pose a serious public health risk."

They urge the public to "switch off mobile phones, avoid buying homes under powerlines, shift alarm clocks away from their heads at night, and turn off electric blankets before going to sleep to avoid exposure." This was reported in the Melbourne Sunday Herald-Sun on 8/8/99.

SEEING IS BELIEVING

The extreme complexity of the EMR interaction with the living system is difficult to imagine and beyond the understanding of most people. For a time, the power industry had available a very good Public Information Series of cards, now out of print. Reproduced here is material from page 6 of the series, which gives a visual clue to the biological, EMR interaction.

EMFs and
Your Health

There is scientific uncertainty about the effects on human health of electric and magnetic fields, but no casual link has been established. Research continues worldwide and it is generally agreed that questions remain about how these fields - especially magnetic fields - affect the human body.
The debate over whether or not EMFs have any effect on human health began in the late 1960s. Since then thousands of scientific studies have been carried out around the world.
The studies have looked at a wide variety of possible health consequences, including cancer, reproductive effects and "stress". Much has been learnt, but the critical questions remain unanswered.
Therefore, it is difficult to know whether or how modifying your EMF exposure will influence any possible risk.
Until more is known about EMF your best course is to stay informed and, if you choose, take reasonable steps to limit your exposure.

What happens when you are exposed to EMF?
EMF fields create weak electric currents in the bodies of people and animals. Currents due to EMF are weaker than natural currents in the body - such as those from the electrical activity of the brain and the heart.
Some scientists argue that it is impossible for EMF to have any important effects since cells would not be able to detect them. Other scientists hold different views.

What scientific authorities say
The research on EMF has been extensively reviewed by bodies such as the World Health Organisation, the International Radiation Protection Association, the National Radiological Protection Board (UK) and the National Health and Medical Research Council (Australia).

All have concluded that no causal link has been established between adverse human health effects and the electric and magnetic fields encountered in everyday life. However, it is generally agreed that ongoing research is still required.

What is the best response?
Until we have more definite answers about possible health risks from EMFs, the best course of action is to remain well informed on the subject. Following an enquiry into the issue in Australia, Sir Harry Gibbs a former Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia suggested electric utilities building new high voltage power lines "do whatever can be done without undue inconvenience and at modest expense to avert the possible risk." You may wish to adapt this policy of "prudent avoidance" by limiting your exposure to EMFs in the office and around the home where this is easy and practical to do.

To date, there is no consensus among researchers on whether or not EMFs have an adverse effect on human health.

PRODUCED IN THE INTEREST OF COMMUNITY AWARENESS

It shows clearly, the manner in which electric and magnetic fields, by induction activate within the human system, with the potential to impact adversely on the human body. The interaction is complex and does not easily reveal exactly how health is impaired by a single event or by the cumulative effect of many such events. Without doubt, many people become mildly to severely debilitated, even quite disabled, as a result of EMR induced currents of electricity, resulting from EMR exposure.

Many report headaches, migraine, disorientation, mood changes, clumsiness, joint and muscular aches and pains and breathing difficulties and carbohydrate cravings.

Russian studies have investigated the effects of EMR on the acupuncture points of the body.

In the former USSR, from the early 1960's, studies revealed that microwaves and radiofrequency radiation exposure have considerable effects on living systems leading to life-threatening illnesses.
