May 1998 : New standard set for phone towers
A NEW Australian standard designed to help communication companies share the same sites for mobile phone and broadcast towers has just been released.
The standard - AS 3516.2 – 1998 follows extensive consultation with all stakeholders, including members of the public, regulators, communication providers and health and environmental professionals.
The standard has been described as the most comprehensive of its kind in the world, giving sound guidance on the planning, siting, construction and operation of facilities.
Radiation expert Dr Bruce Hocking said by sharing sites communication companies would help avoid a proliferation of otherwise unnecessary radio communication towers impacting on communities.
Warringah MP Tony Abbott said the new standard complemented the work the Federal Government had done last year to try to ensure as few as possible mobile phone towers.
"We are trying to ensure they (the towers) are placed as unobtrusively as possible," Mr Abbott said.
"This new standard shows regulatory authorities are maintaining their vigilance."
Dr Hocking said the standard contained information on how to minimise the radio frequency radiation exposure limits for any people working on site, including tradesmen working on rooftops.
It also covered technical information on how to minimise radio frequency interference.
